Wondering, “Why tutoring?”

Tutoring is a proven strategy to help students learn academic material with which they are struggling, re-gain skills lost due to high absences or crisis situations (such as the Covid 19 pandemic), and close the learning gap that many students with learning challenges experience both prior to and after they enter school.  Research from EdResearch for Recovery (February 2021) has shown that tutoring can meaningfully increase learning for a wide variety of K-12 students.  Recent studies investigating tutoring interventions that have been evaluated over the past few decades found that, on average, tutoring increased achievement by roughly an additional three to 15 months of learning across grade levels. Another review of almost 200 studies found that high-dosage tutoring—defined as three or more days per week or at a rate of at least 50 hours over 36 weeks—is one of the few school-based interventions with demonstrated large positive effects on math and reading achievement. While effective tutoring can be expensive, the large average effects of tutoring makes it highly cost effective relative to many other educational interventions. And tutoring is one of the most effective ways to increase achievement for students from lower income families! A 2017 study looked at interventions that aimed to improve educational achievement for elementary and middle school students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Of all the interventions examined, including feedback and progress monitoring, cooperative learning, computer-assisted instruction, and mentoring of students, tutoring was most effective.
